Dwarf Lemurs of the Central Highlands
Mentors: Marina Blanco &
Onja Razafindratsima
Timeline: Mar - Nov, 2026
Background: Madagascar's central highlands have long been overlooked as lemur habitat. Itremo, a large Protected Area in the region, is home to a population of furry-eared dwarf lemurs that inhabit natural and small forest fragments interspersed with grasslands. Here, we are tracking individual lemurs to document foraging and ranging behavior before and after hibernation

About to launch

This initiative will launch in March, 2026! We are currently finalizing student recruitment and have already ordered the radio collars to track dwarf lemurs.

In conversations with Royal Botanic Gardens- Kew, the organization that manages the Itremo Protected Area, we have selected forest fragments on the western side of Itremo to conduct our study. Kew already has trained local teams, implemented botanical plots, and launched reforestation efforts in this area. We are looking forward to a great field season!
